Every Shankar film is a celebration itself. But when South India’s top director decided to remake the blockbuster Three Idiots in Tamil, many things went haywire. The original cast and crew he planned opted out of the plan, a rarest of the rare incident for a director like Shankar. After months of uncertainty, the film christened Nanban has started rolling in Dehradun.
The producers, Gemini Film Circuit, which brought the remake rights for a record price, are buoyant, yet cautious.
Says a Gemini spokesman, “Our last two projects were blockbusters, Vasool Raja MBBS (remake of Munnabhai MBBS) and Kutty. We are extra-cautious this time to ensure that this too follows suit, given the magnitude of the original that was acclaimed both critically and commercially. Though we are glad that it is Shankar who is at the helm of affairs, we are still anxious about the outcome.”
Having made a reentry to the project, Vijay has reportedly gone in for a total make-over. The film also has Jiiva and Srikanth in the lead roles. Illeana, who had been refusing offers from Tamil filmmakers, has finally agreed to play the female lead and it is her comeback film in Tamil after Kedi.
Director SJ Suryah and Sathyaraj are also part of the main cast. We hear that Shankar has taken extra efforts to ensure Sathyaraj is presented in a new avatar — a look that neither resembles the sharp-tongued actor (on screen) nor Bomman Irani, who played the role in the original.
Even the songs in the film – music by Harris Jayaraj – will have new tunes, dropping the original numbers from the Amir Khan-starrer original. Manoj Paramahamsa is the cinematographer.
A few schedules have already been shot at Lawrence School in Ooty, besides other locations in Tamil Nadu.
Ileana has reportedly been roped in for a whopping sum of ` 1.75 crore. Subsequent to this offer, a Telugu producer has acquired her call-sheet for a bigger sum, we hear! If sources are to be believed, Ileana’s remuneration may further skyrocket following this development.
